They explain profound yogic philosophy and many transformative yoga practices.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are the eight limbs of yoga?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 400 CE, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artofliving.org\/us-en\/yoga\/patanjali-yogasutra\/knowledge-sheet-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maharishi Patanjali<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a sage scientist from India, wrote 196 aphorisms on yoga, popularly known as Maharishi Patanjali\u2019s Yoga Sutra. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sutra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means \u201cto thread or weave\u201d just as the English word suture means \u201cto stitch together.\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sutras<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are so clear, accurate, full of precious wisdom to prevent, overcome and transcend the human miseries and suffering even in modern times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sutras<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (or writings) of Patanjali are divided into four sections or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">padas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The practice of the eight-fold path of yoga comes from section two called the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sadhana Pada<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In this chapter, Sage Patanjali mentions this eight-fold path as \u201cashtanga yoga\u201d in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sutra<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 29 (aphorism 2.29). He created this path to help us transcend human sufferings and to reach self-realization and ultimate freedom. (2.29)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yama, Niyama, \u0100sana, Pr\u0101n\u0101y\u0101ma, Praty\u0101h\u0101ra, Dh\u0101ran\u0101, Dhy\u0101na, and Sam\u0101dhi are the eight limbs of Yoga.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ashta<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means eight, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anga<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means limbs. Many people only know yoga as the practice of physical yoga postures. It is definitely a good starting point. In ancient times, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> practice was meant more for cultivating the physical and mental stability and easiness that is required for the practice of meditation (the seventh limb). The literal meaning of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is \u201ca seat\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asanas include the dual qualities of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alertness (steadiness) and relaxation (easeness).<\/span><\/i> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asanas give us an opportunity to study and explore the physical realm of our existence. More than flexibility of muscles and alignments, they are about connecting physical steadiness to stillness and happiness of mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asanas involve increased awareness of various physical and physiological processes\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">influenced by controlled stretching, contraction, relaxation, and coordination of various <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">muscles, and in balancing and maintenance of posture.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At a deeper level, asana means full expression of mind-body integration, in which one <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">becomes consciously aware of the flow of life energy in the body. Performing asanas with\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">awareness is practice for<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">performing every action in life with awareness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is believed that there are more than 84,000 different yoga poses. Don\u2019t get intrigued by this huge number! You don\u2019t have to learn that many poses! Just a handful of them will be great. As you progress you may add some more challenging advanced poses.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breathing practices: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pranayama<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p><b><i>Pranayama<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> consists of two Sanskrit words\u2014<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prana<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (life force) and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ayama<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (control). So, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pranayama<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> means the regulation of the flow of life force. It is the science of breathing. Breath is the physical expression of life-force energy. In recent years, the term breathwork has been coined to describe breathing exercises or breathing techniques.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We breathe every single minute. We take approximately 21, 600 breaths every day!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breath is a bridge between our body, mind and spirit. Changes in our mind affect our\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breathing and vice-versa. Our senses distract us from coming inwards. The various techniques of <\/span><b><i>Pratyahara<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> teach us to withdraw our senses from the outer world. These techniques allow the mind to settle inwards.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intention and focus: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dharana<\/span><\/i><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the mind settles inwards we can train it to focus effortlessly. <\/span><b><i>Dharana<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> techniques help us in maintaining this inward attention. It is the skill of relaxing the mind totally and living in the present moment. Through regular practice of meditation, we can remain in witness consciousness and achieve a blissful state with complete evenness of mind and harmony with the universal consciousness. This is the final limb, <\/span><b><i>Samadhi<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why should you practice 8 limbs of yoga?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sage Patanjali explains this in Sutra 29 of the second chapter.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u092f\u094b\u0917\u093e\u0919\u094d\u0917\u093e\u0928\u0941\u0937\u094d\u0920\u093e\u0928\u093e\u0926\u0936\u0941\u0926\u094d\u0927\u093f\u0915\u094d\u0937\u092f\u0947 \u091c\u094d\u091e\u093e\u0928\u0926\u0940\u092a\u094d\u0924\u093f\u0930\u093e \u0935\u093f\u0935\u0947\u0915\u0916\u094d\u092f\u093e\u0924\u0947\u0903 \u0965 \u0968.\u0968\u096e\u0965<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cYoga anga anushtanat\u00a0 ashuddhi kshaye jnanadi Apthiraviveka khyatehe\u2019\u2019 (2. 28)<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBy the sustained practice of the eight limbs of yoga, the impurities are destroyed and the light of wisdom, discrimination shines forth.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we move through the eight limbs of yoga as a dynamic whole, the practice starts to reveal our true self. All conflict and duality drops to illuminate the light that we are. As explained by Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, \u201cYoga has eight limbs like a chair which has got four legs. Yoga has eight legs, eight limbs; each one is connected to the whole. So if you pull one, everything else will come. If you pull one leg up, the whole chair comes. When the body is developing, the whole body develops together. Organs develop together. Not that the nose develops first and then the ear comes. Simultaneously all the aspects, all the limbs of the body develop.
